I remember you said you had 15 hummers at one time at your feeders this summer; that is awesome! I only have 2 at a time, tops.
Birdingvahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11167668021891322610noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4749095146804897256.post-17307652851529865942014-09-06T10:18:35.088-07:002014-09-06T10:18:35.088-07:00Me too -- I think I just have one hummingbird left...Me too -- I think I just have one hummingbird left. They should all be gone by mid-September. So any hummingbird you see after October is possibly a western vagrant -- keep your eyes peeled!
Birdingvahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11167668021891322610noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4749095146804897256.post-10435669770654163172014-09-06T09:59:12.831-07:002014-09-06T09:59:12.831-07:00 Placed two feeders alongside my apartment patio ... Placed two feeders alongside my apartment patio in Williamsburg, VA this spring after moving here. Had four to five birds feeding through most of the summer. As of late August into the first of September it appears we are down to only one that continues to visit the feeders to feed. Keep your feeders filled! I do, but sadly I have yet to attract a wintering hummingbird at my house!Birdingvahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11167668021891322610noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4749095146804897256.post-65215322934855990302014-08-30T16:50:50.339-07:002014-08-30T16:50:50.339-07:00I have just started first year feeding hummers in ...I have just started first year feeding hummers in warrentonva;) I'll let you know if any stay for winter ! I lived in Oregon for many years, and would drive up to B.C. to bird, especially in the winter to look for rare gulls, gyrfalcons, skylarks, waterfowl and whatever else was around. I have a question -- are your winter hummingbirds Rufous or Anna's?Birdingvahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11167668021891322610noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4749095146804897256.post-79906499419721378702010-11-22T19:04:57.266-08:002010-11-22T19:04:57.266-08:00We are in central Nanaimo and do the same thing- r...We are in central Nanaimo and do the same thing- rotate the feeders so they have warm nectar first thing in the morning and again later in the afternoon (around 3PM). I am amazed that these tiny birds make it though the night when the temperature drops to -17! They are so used to us that if we are late bringing their feeder out we get quite the chirping like they are bawling us out LOL.
I've read that wrapping the glass part of the feeder with led lights keeps them from freezing but we don't have an outside outlet to test this theory. Too bad someone wouldn't invent a battery powered heated feeder!green_sleeveshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10004123267888837806noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4749095146804897256.post-11089839820672289892010-11-21T08:37:01.564-08:002010-11-21T08:37:01.564-08:00its November 20,and were i live is the south gulf ...its November 20,and were i live is the south gulf islands in between Vancouver and Vancouver island, and this is the first year that i have kept my feeders out,as the hummers just did not leave, and i was worried for there food supply,i was afraid that by keeping them out i was enticing the hummers to stay the winter, the more i read i find that it is not the way and i should keep the feeders up,it is now freezing out side,so i have been rotating feeders, one in and then when that one starts to freeze than i exchange it with the other,i was a bit concerned about this cold weather and how these remarkable little wonders, would fair in the cold, but it seems that they will be ok,thanks to your info,in your blog, well i am off to the park to feed the pigeons,as with these freezing temperatures they are having a hard time of it,thanks so much mikemik008https://www.blogger.com/profile/18053815756782159980noreply@blogger.com
